Vinyl and Plastic Restorer
A castile soap and olive oil treatment that cleans faded dashboards and restores color to vinyl trim
10 min beginner Yields 8 oz spray bottle
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup Distilled water
- 2 tbsp White vinegar
- 1 tsp Liquid castile soap
- 1 tsp Olive oil (light or extra-light for less scent)
- 1/2 tsp Vegetable glycerin (adds UV protection and a non-greasy matte finish)
Steps
- Add 3/4 cup of distilled water to an 8 oz spray bottle.
- Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of liquid castile soap.
- Add 1 teaspoon of olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin. Shake well.
- Spray a light mist onto a microfiber cloth — not directly on the surface.
- Wipe the faded vinyl or plastic surface using overlapping strokes.
- For heavily faded areas, let the solution sit for 2 minutes before wiping.
- Flip the cloth to a dry side and buff to a natural matte finish.
- Repeat on door panels, center console, and any other vinyl or hard plastic trim.
Why It Works
Castile soap lifts embedded dust and oils from the textured surface of vinyl without stripping the material. Vinegar dissolves the film of plasticizer residue that makes old dashboards look hazy and gray. Olive oil absorbs into vinyl pores, restoring flexibility and darkening the surface back toward its original color. Vegetable glycerin provides a thin, non-greasy protective layer that resists UV degradation without the artificial shine of silicone-based products.
Alternative
- Replace olive oil with jojoba oil for a lighter finish on matte-textured dashboards.
- For deep restoration on severely faded panels, double the olive oil to 2 teaspoons and apply with a soft toothbrush to work into textured grain.
Tips
- Shake before each use — oil separates from water between uses.
- Use a soft detailing brush for textured surfaces with deep grooves.
- Do not use on leather seats — leather needs a pH-neutral cleaner and separate conditioner.
- Keeps for up to 2 months at room temperature.
- Reapply monthly on dashboards exposed to direct sunlight.
