Frozen Fruit Teething Soothers

Frozen fruit in a mesh feeder — safe, natural teething relief that costs almost nothing

2 hrs beginner Yields 6-8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 medium Ripe banana (peeled and cut into chunks)
  • 4-5 berries Fresh or frozen strawberries (halved)
  • 2-3 tbsp Breast milk or formula (optional, for frozen milk pops)

Steps

  1. Cut banana into 1-inch chunks. Halve the strawberries.
  2. Spread fruit pieces on a parchment-lined baking sheet in a single layer.
  3. Freeze for at least 2 hours until solid.
  4. Transfer frozen fruit to a freezer bag or container for storage.
  5. To use: place 1-2 pieces of frozen fruit into a silicone or mesh feeder. Hand to baby and supervise.
  6. Breast milk pops (optional): Pour breast milk or formula into ice cube trays, freeze, and pop a cube into the mesh feeder for a soothing, nutritious teether.

Why It Works

The cold from frozen fruit numbs sore gums — the same principle behind teething rings that you refrigerate, but with added nutrition. The mesh feeder allows baby to gnaw and suck on the fruit without any choking risk from solid pieces. As the fruit thaws, baby gets the flavor and nutrients while the cold provides continuous relief. The chewing action itself also helps emerging teeth break through the gum tissue.

The Cost Comparison

Commercial teething gels cost $6-10 per tube and are applied multiple times daily. Teething tablets run $8-12 per bottle. Frozen fruit costs whatever you are already paying for groceries — essentially free if you use fruit that is getting overripe. A mesh feeder costs $5-8 and lasts for months. Total ongoing cost: virtually zero beyond the feeder itself.

Tips

  • Bananas, strawberries, peeled peaches, watermelon, and mango all work well. Avoid grapes (choking hazard shape) and citrus (too acidic for sore gums).
  • Overripe bananas are perfect for this — freeze them before they go to waste.
  • A cold, damp washcloth knotted and frozen is another zero-cost teething option for younger babies who are not yet eating solids.
  • Breast milk popsicles are particularly soothing and familiar-tasting for exclusively breastfed babies.
  • Clean the mesh feeder thoroughly after each use. Soak in warm water with a drop of castile soap, scrub with a small brush, and air dry.
  • Some babies prefer cool (refrigerated) fruit over frozen — experiment to see what your baby likes.
