Gentle Baby Wash & Shampoo

An all-in-one baby wash made from castile soap — replaces $8-12 bottles of baby wash

5 min beginner Yields 8 oz bottle

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Castile soap (unscented)
  • 1 cup Water

Steps

  1. Pour 2 tablespoons of unscented castile soap into a clean 8 oz squeeze bottle or foaming pump bottle.
  2. Add 1 cup of water.
  3. Cap the bottle and gently swirl to combine. Do not shake vigorously — this creates excessive foam.
  4. To use: apply a small amount to a wet washcloth or directly to wet skin. Lather gently and rinse.

Why It Works

Castile soap is made from plant oils (typically olive, coconut, and hemp) saponified with potassium hydroxide. The finished soap contains no residual lye — it is fully reacted into a mild surfactant. At this dilution (roughly 1:8), it is gentle enough for infant skin while still effectively removing sweat, spit-up, and diaper residue. It rinses completely clean without leaving behind the synthetic conditioning agents found in commercial baby washes, which can clog pores and irritate sensitive skin.

The Cost Comparison

A 32 oz bottle of unscented castile soap costs $12-16 and makes roughly 32 bottles of this baby wash. That works out to about $0.40-0.50 per 8 oz bottle. A comparable bottle of brand-name baby wash costs $8-12. Over a year of bathing (going through roughly one bottle per month), the savings are around $90-140.

Tips

  • A foaming pump bottle works best — it dispenses a light foam that is easier to apply to a squirming baby.
  • For dry or eczema-prone skin, reduce the castile soap to 1 tablespoon per cup of water for an even milder wash.
  • Babies do not need a bath every day. Two to three baths per week is sufficient for most infants. Spot-clean with a damp cloth between baths.
  • Make only what you will use in 2-3 weeks. Without preservatives, the diluted soap has a limited shelf life.
  • This works equally well as a shampoo. Baby hair is thin and produces minimal oil — a gentle castile wash is all it needs.
