Baby-Safe Laundry Detergent

A fragrance-free, gentle laundry soap for baby clothes, swaddles, and bedding

10 min beginner Yields 32 oz (about 32 loads)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unscented liquid castile soap
  • 1/2 cup Washing soda
  • 1/2 cup Baking soda
  • 3 cups Water

Steps

  1. Heat 3 cups of water until warm (not boiling).
  2. Add 1/2 cup of washing soda and 1/2 cup of baking soda. Stir until fully dissolved.
  3. Let the mixture cool to room temperature.
  4. Add 1 cup of unscented liquid castile soap and stir gently to combine.
  5. Pour into a clean 32 oz bottle or jar. Label clearly.
  6. To use: shake well and add 2 tablespoons per regular load. Use warm or cold water.

Why It Works

Castile soap provides the surfactant action — it lifts spit-up, formula stains, and body oils from fabric. Washing soda boosts cleaning power by softening water and increasing alkalinity, which helps break down protein-based stains (the majority of baby-related messes). Baking soda neutralizes sour milk and urine odors. Together, these three ingredients clean as effectively as commercial baby detergent without the fragrance, dyes, optical brighteners, or synthetic preservatives that can irritate sensitive newborn skin.

The Cost Comparison

Name-brand “baby” and “free and clear” detergents cost $12-15 for 50 loads ($0.25-0.30 per load). The sensitive-skin specialty brands run even higher. This recipe makes about 32 loads for roughly $2.50 in ingredients ($0.08 per load). Over a year — and babies generate a lot of laundry — the savings are $60-80.

Tips

  • For stubborn spit-up or formula stains, pre-treat by rubbing a small amount of straight castile soap into the stain before washing.
  • This detergent works in both standard and HE machines. For HE machines, use 1 tablespoon per load.
  • Wash new baby clothes before first wear, even organic ones. Manufacturing residue and sizing chemicals wash out easily but can irritate newborn skin.
  • Do not add vinegar as a fabric softener to baby loads — use wool dryer balls instead.
  • Store at room temperature. If separation occurs, shake before use — this is normal and does not affect performance.
