Homemade Trail Mix

A balanced trail mix of raw nuts, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate chips with a pinch of sea salt.

5 min beginner Yields 3 cups Keeps 2-3 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Raw almonds
  • 1/2 cup Raw cashews
  • 1/3 cup Pumpkin seeds (raw or lightly toasted)
  • 1/3 cup Dried cranberries (unsweetened or apple-juice sweetened)
  • 1/3 cup Dark chocolate chips (70% cacao or higher)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea salt (flaky)

Steps

  1. Measure all ingredients into a large bowl: almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, dark chocolate chips, and sea salt.
  2. Toss everything together with your hands or a large spoon until the sea salt is evenly distributed and the smaller ingredients (pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips) are dispersed throughout rather than sinking to the bottom.
  3. Divide the trail mix into individual portions of about half a cup each. Small mason jars, reusable silicone bags, or small containers work well for portioning.
  4. For an upgraded version, spread the almonds and cashews on a baking sheet and toast them at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for eight to ten minutes until fragrant before mixing. Toasting deepens the flavor significantly but is optional.

Why It Works

Combining raw nuts with seeds creates a complete amino acid profile while delivering magnesium, zinc, and selenium, minerals that support cognitive function and energy metabolism. Pumpkin seeds are particularly rich in zinc, which plays a direct role in memory and concentration. The dark chocolate chips provide a small amount of caffeine and theobromine for gentle mental stimulation, while the dried cranberries offer a tart sweetness that balances the richness of the nuts and keeps you reaching for more.

Tips

  • Variation. Add unsweetened coconut flakes, cacao nibs, or freeze-dried strawberries. For a savory version, replace the cranberries and chocolate with roasted chickpeas and a pinch of smoked paprika.
  • Storage. Keep in an airtight container away from heat and light. In warm weather, store in the refrigerator to prevent the chocolate chips from melting and clumping the mix together.
  • Substitution. Any raw nut works. Walnuts add omega-3s, pecans add a buttery richness, and macadamia nuts are the most decadent option. Use dried blueberries or cherries in place of cranberries.
