Everything Bagel Avocado Spread

Creamy avocado mashed with lemon juice and topped with everything bagel seasoning — the simplest upgrade to your morning toast.

5 min beginner Yields about 1 cup Keeps Best eaten fresh, up to 24 hours with plastic wrap pressed to surface

Ingredients

  • 2 avocado (ripe — should yield to gentle pressure)
  • 1 tbsp everything bagel seasoning (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and sea salt)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice (fresh squeezed)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt (adjust to taste)

Steps

  1. Halve the avocados, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Add the lemon juice and sea salt immediately.
  2. Mash with a fork to your preferred texture — some people like it smooth, others like it chunky with visible avocado pieces. Both work here.
  3. Spread the mashed avocado onto toasted bread, crackers, or rice cakes in a thick, even layer.
  4. Sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning generously over the top. Press it gently into the avocado so the seeds and spices adhere.
  5. Serve immediately. Finish with a crack of black pepper or a drizzle of olive oil if desired.

Why It Works

The everything bagel seasoning transforms plain mashed avocado by adding five distinct flavors and textures in a single sprinkle — toasted sesame, nutty poppy seeds, sharp dried garlic, sweet dried onion, and crunchy salt. The lemon juice serves double duty: it prevents the avocado from browning and adds a brightness that balances the richness of the fat. This combination is why this spread has become a modern breakfast staple.

Tips

  • Variation. Top with a fried egg for a complete breakfast, or add sliced radishes and a pinch of red pepper flakes for extra crunch and heat. A few drops of good olive oil on top never hurts.
  • Storage. If you need to make this ahead, store the mashed avocado with plastic wrap pressed directly onto the surface (not stretched over the bowl) to minimize air contact. The lemon juice slows browning, but this is always best fresh.
  • Make your own seasoning. Combine 1 tablespoon each of white sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, and poppy seeds with 1 1/2 teaspoons each of dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, and flaky sea salt. Store in a jar — it keeps for months and costs a fraction of the pre-made version.
