Steamed Apple Sticks

Tender steamed apple sticks with cinnamon — soft enough for grasping and gumming.

15 min beginner Yields 8-10 sticks Keeps 2 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 1 large Apple (Fuji or Gala work well)
  • 1 cup Water (For steaming)
  • 1 pinch Ground cinnamon (Optional)

Steps

  1. Peel the apple completely. For babies under 12 months, apple skin is a choking hazard and too tough to chew — always remove it.

  2. Cut the apple into thick sticks, roughly the size of an adult finger (about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide). This shape is ideal for baby’s palmar grasp.

  3. Set up a steamer basket over a pot with about an inch of water. Bring the water to a boil.

  4. Place the apple sticks in the steamer basket, cover, and steam for 8-10 minutes. Test by pressing a stick with your finger — it should give easily and feel soft throughout, not just on the surface.

  5. Remove from the steamer and let cool. Dust lightly with cinnamon if desired. The sticks should be soft enough that you can squish them between your fingers with gentle pressure.

Why It Works

Steaming softens apples to a safe, gummable texture while preserving more vitamins and flavor than boiling. The finger-stick shape is designed for baby-led weaning — babies can grip the stick in their fist and gnaw on the portion that sticks out above their hand. Apples provide gentle fiber and natural sweetness, and the cinnamon adds a familiar, warming flavor without any sugar.

Tips

  • Test the squish. Before serving, press a stick between your thumb and finger. If it squishes easily, it’s safe. If it resists or feels firm in the center, steam for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Cut thick, not thin. Thin slices are harder for babies to grip and can break into small pieces. Thick sticks are safer and easier to hold.
  • Skip tart apples. Granny Smith and other tart varieties don’t steam as soft. Stick with sweeter varieties like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp.
