Peanut Butter Oat Balls

No-bake energy balls with peanut butter, rolled oats, honey, and mini chocolate chips.

45 min beginner Yields 18-20 balls Keeps 1 week refrigerated, 3 months frozen

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Peanut butter (Natural, creamy)
  • 1 cup Rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup Raw honey
  • 1/4 cup Mini chocolate chips (Dark chocolate preferred)
  • 1 pinch Sea salt

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, stir together the peanut butter and honey until smooth and well combined. If your peanut butter is very thick, microwave it for 15-20 seconds first to make stirring easier.

  2. Add the rolled oats and sea salt. Stir until every oat is coated and the mixture forms a thick, sticky dough.

  3. Fold in the mini chocolate chips, distributing them evenly throughout the dough.

  4. Refrigerate the dough for 20-30 minutes. This firms it up and makes rolling much easier β€” warm dough sticks to your hands and won’t hold its shape.

  5. Using slightly damp hands, scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll into tight balls. Pack the dough firmly as you roll so the balls don’t crumble.

  6. Place the finished balls on a parchment-lined tray or plate. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to set before serving or packing into containers.

Why It Works

Peanut butter and honey act as the binding agents here β€” the fat and stickiness hold the oats and chocolate chips together without any baking. Rolled oats provide sustained energy from complex carbohydrates, while the peanut butter delivers protein and healthy fats that keep kids satisfied between meals. These taste like a treat but deliver genuine nutrition, which is the ideal snack balance.

Tips

  • Chill the dough first. Skipping the refrigeration step is the most common mistake. Warm dough is impossible to roll neatly. Take the 20 minutes.
  • Use rolled oats, not quick oats. Quick oats dissolve into the peanut butter and create a mushy, dense ball. Rolled oats maintain their structure and give a satisfying chewy texture.
  • Get kids involved. Rolling balls is a perfect kitchen task for small hands. Kids who help make their snacks are far more likely to eat them happily.
