Banana Avocado Mash

A creamy two-ingredient mash of ripe banana and avocado — perfect for baby's first foods.

5 min beginner Yields 1/2 cup Keeps Best served fresh

Ingredients

  • 1/2 medium Ripe banana (Very ripe with brown spots)
  • 1/4 medium Ripe avocado (Soft when pressed)

Steps

  1. Peel the banana and place half of it in a small bowl. The riper the banana, the sweeter and softer the mash will be.

  2. Halve the avocado, remove the pit, and scoop out a quarter of the flesh into the same bowl.

  3. Mash both together with the back of a fork, pressing and stirring until you reach a smooth, creamy consistency with no large lumps.

  4. For younger babies (6-8 months), press the mash through a fine mesh strainer for an even silkier texture. For older babies comfortable with soft textures, a fork mash is perfect.

  5. Serve immediately at room temperature. This mash browns quickly, so prepare it right before feeding.

Why It Works

Banana and avocado are two of the best first foods because they’re naturally soft, nutrient-dense, and easy to digest. Avocado provides healthy fats essential for brain development, while banana offers natural sweetness that babies love along with potassium and gentle fiber. Together, they create a balanced, creamy mash that needs nothing else added.

Tips

  • Serve fresh. Avocado oxidizes and turns brown within 20-30 minutes. A squeeze of lemon slows this, but for babies under 12 months, it’s best to just make it fresh each time.
  • Adjust the ratio. If your baby prefers sweeter food, use more banana. For a richer, creamier mash, increase the avocado.
  • Texture progression. Start silky smooth for new eaters, then gradually leave more texture as your baby develops chewing skills over the coming weeks.
