Mashed Sweet Potato with Butter

Creamy mashed sweet potato with butter, cinnamon, and sea salt — soft, potassium-rich, and comforting.

30 min beginner Yields 2 cups Keeps 4-5 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 2 medium Sweet potato (peeled and cubed)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea salt (fine grain)

Steps

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch cubes. Uniform size ensures they cook at the same rate — larger pieces will be undercooked while smaller ones turn to mush.

  2. Place the cubes in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water by one inch. Add a pinch of sea salt. Starting in cold water produces a more evenly cooked potato than dropping cubes into boiling water.

  3. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a steady simmer. Cook for 12-15 minutes until a fork slides through the largest cube with no resistance. Drain thoroughly in a colander and return the potatoes to the warm pot.

  4. Add the butter, cinnamon, and sea salt. Mash with a potato masher or fork until smooth and creamy. For an ultra-smooth texture, use a hand mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Do not use a food processor — it overworks the starch and turns the potatoes gluey.

  5. Taste and adjust salt and cinnamon. Serve warm as a snack, side dish, or on its own as a soft, nourishing comfort food.

Why It Works

Sweet potatoes are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, delivering high levels of beta-carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A), potassium, and fiber in a naturally sweet, easy-to-eat form. Mashing them makes the nutrients more accessible by breaking down the cell walls, and the butter provides fat that is necessary for absorbing the beta-carotene. Potassium is especially important for maintaining healthy blood pressure and muscle function, and most people — particularly older adults — do not consume enough of it.

Tips

  • Texture adjustment. For a thinner, smoother mash, add a splash of warm whole milk while mashing. For a thicker consistency, skip the extra liquid entirely.
  • Batch prep. Make a large batch and portion into individual containers. Reheat in a saucepan with a small pat of butter and a splash of water, stirring until warm and creamy.
  • Variations. Stir in a tablespoon of raw honey for extra sweetness, or add a pinch of nutmeg alongside the cinnamon for a warmer, more complex flavor.
