Iron-Rich Energy Balls

Chewy date and tahini energy balls with cacao and blackstrap molasses — packed with plant-based iron and quick energy.

45 min beginner Yields 20 balls Keeps 7-10 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Medjool dates (pitted, about 10-12 dates)
  • 1/3 cup Tahini (well-stirred)
  • 3 tablespoons Cacao powder (raw, unsweetened)
  • 1 tablespoon Blackstrap molasses
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea salt (fine grain)
  • 1/2 cup Rolled oats (for binding)

Steps

  1. If your dates are dry or firm, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes and drain well. Soft, fresh Medjool dates do not need soaking. Remove any pits and add the dates to a food processor.

  2. Add the tahini, cacao powder, blackstrap molasses, and sea salt to the food processor. Pulse 10-15 times until the mixture begins to come together, then process continuously for 30-45 seconds until a thick, sticky dough forms. The texture should hold together when pressed between your fingers.

  3. Add the rolled oats and pulse 8-10 times until just incorporated. The oats should be broken into smaller pieces but not turned to flour — they provide texture and structure to the balls.

  4. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions and roll between your palms into firm balls. If the mixture is too sticky, dampen your hands slightly with water. Place the finished balls on a parchment-lined plate or tray.

  5. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. The balls will hold their shape much better after chilling and develop a pleasant chewy texture.

Why It Works

Blackstrap molasses is one of the most concentrated plant sources of iron, delivering roughly 3.5mg per tablespoon alongside calcium, magnesium, and potassium. Pairing it with cacao — another significant iron source — and the vitamin C naturally present in dates enhances non-heme iron absorption dramatically. Tahini adds additional iron and calcium, making these energy balls a targeted snack for women who need to replenish iron stores, especially during menstruation.

Tips

  • Boost absorption. Eat these alongside a glass of orange juice or a few slices of citrus fruit. Vitamin C can increase non-heme iron absorption by up to five times.
  • Coating. Roll finished balls in shredded coconut, hemp seeds, or additional cacao powder for a cleaner handling experience and a more polished look.
  • Freezing. These freeze well for up to 2 months. Freeze on a sheet pan first, then transfer to a freezer bag. Thaw at room temperature for 10 minutes before eating.
