Watermelon Mint Cooler

Blended watermelon with fresh mint and lime. Three ingredients, zero added sugar, completely refreshing.

10 min beginner Yields 4 cups Keeps 1-2 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Seedless watermelon (cubed, chilled)
  • 8-10 leaves Fresh mint leaves (plus extra for garnish)
  • 1 tbsp Fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 1/2 cup Cold water (optional, for thinner consistency)

Steps

  1. Cut the watermelon into cubes, removing any seeds. For the best texture, chill the cubes in the refrigerator or freezer for 30 minutes before blending. Cold watermelon blends thicker and tastes more refreshing than room-temperature fruit.

  2. Add the watermelon cubes, fresh mint leaves, and lime juice to a blender. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds until completely smooth and frothy.

  3. Taste the mixture. Ripe watermelon is sweet enough on its own, but if yours is underripe or bland, add 1 teaspoon of raw honey. The lime juice should brighten the flavor β€” add a squeeze more if the watermelon is very sweet and needs balance.

  4. If the consistency is too thick, add cold water a few tablespoons at a time and blend briefly until it reaches your preferred consistency. For a slushy texture, blend in a handful of ice cubes.

  5. Pour into glasses over ice. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint and a thin lime wheel. Serve immediately β€” watermelon drinks are at their best fresh.

Why It Works

Watermelon is over 90% water by weight, making it one of the most naturally hydrating fruits available. It also contains citrulline, an amino acid that supports blood flow and exercise recovery. Mint adds a cooling sensation that amplifies the refreshment factor without any calories or sugar, and the lime juice provides vitamin C while preventing the watermelon from tasting flat or one-dimensional.

Tips

  • Frozen watermelon cubes. Freeze watermelon chunks on a baking sheet and store in a bag. Use them straight from the freezer for a slushy cooler that doesn’t need ice and won’t get watered down.
  • Pick a ripe watermelon. The best indicator is a large yellow spot on the bottom (the field spot) where it rested on the ground. A deep yellow spot means it ripened fully on the vine and will be sweet.
  • Agua fresca style. For a thinner, more drinkable version, strain the blended watermelon through a fine-mesh sieve and serve over ice. This removes the pulp and gives you a crystal-clear, intensely flavored drink.
