Clean Energy Drink

A natural energy boost from brewed green tea, lemon, raw honey, and sea salt. Calm focus without the crash.

15 min beginner Yields 2 cups Keeps 2-3 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 2 bags or 2 tsp loose leaf Green tea (high-quality sencha or matcha)
  • 2 cups Hot water (175 degrees Fahrenheit, not boiling)
  • 1 tbsp Fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tsp Raw honey (stir in after tea cools slightly)
  • 1 small pinch Sea salt (unrefined)

Steps

  1. Heat water to 175 degrees Fahrenheit β€” well below boiling. If you don’t have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it sit for 3 minutes. Green tea brewed in water that’s too hot becomes bitter and astringent.

  2. Steep the green tea bags or loose leaf tea in the hot water for 3 minutes. Do not over-steep. Remove the tea bags or strain out the loose leaves.

  3. Let the tea cool for 2-3 minutes until it’s warm but not hot. Stir in the raw honey until fully dissolved. Adding honey to very hot liquid can degrade its beneficial enzymes, so patience here matters.

  4. Add the fresh lemon juice and sea salt. Stir to combine. The lemon brightens the flavor and the salt balances any remaining bitterness while adding trace minerals.

  5. Serve warm for an immediate energy lift, or pour over a tall glass of ice for a cold energy drink. For meal prep, let the tea cool completely and store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator.

Why It Works

Green tea contains both caffeine and L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm alertness without the jittery spike and crash of coffee or synthetic energy drinks. The caffeine in a cup of green tea releases more gradually than the massive doses in canned energy drinks, providing sustained focus over hours rather than a 30-minute burst. The sea salt adds electrolytes that support hydration β€” dehydration is one of the most common causes of afternoon fatigue.

Tips

  • Temperature is non-negotiable. Brewing green tea at the right temperature is the single biggest factor in taste. Too hot and you’ll extract bitter tannins that make the tea unpleasant. 175 degrees Fahrenheit produces a smooth, slightly sweet brew.
  • Matcha upgrade. For a stronger energy boost, whisk 1 teaspoon of ceremonial-grade matcha powder into warm water instead of steeping tea bags. Matcha delivers the whole leaf, so you get more L-theanine and antioxidants per cup.
  • Afternoon pick-me-up. Make this at 2pm when energy typically dips. The caffeine is mild enough that it won’t interfere with sleep if consumed before 3pm.
