Homemade Electrolyte Drink

A simple electrolyte drink with lemon, raw honey, sea salt, and a pinch of baking soda. Real hydration without dyes or refined sugar.

5 min beginner Yields 2 cups Keeps 24 hours refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Water (filtered)
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1 tablespoon Raw honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sea salt (fine grain)
  • 1 pinch Baking soda (about 1/16 teaspoon)

Steps

  1. Warm half a cup of the water slightly, just enough that it is lukewarm. This makes the honey dissolve quickly and completely. Do not boil, as excessive heat degrades the beneficial enzymes in raw honey.
  2. Add the raw honey to the warm water and stir until fully dissolved. No honey residue should remain on the spoon or at the bottom of the glass.
  3. Add the remaining water, freshly squeezed lemon juice, sea salt, and the pinch of baking soda. Stir vigorously for 15 seconds until everything is combined.
  4. Taste and adjust. If it is too tart, add a little more honey. If it tastes flat, add another small pinch of salt. The drink should taste mildly sweet with a pleasant saltiness.
  5. Pour over ice or refrigerate until cold. Drink within 24 hours for the best flavor and potency.

Why It Works

Sea salt provides sodium and trace minerals like magnesium and potassium, the key electrolytes lost through sweat during training. The small amount of baking soda adds sodium bicarbonate, which helps buffer lactic acid buildup in muscles during intense exercise. Raw honey supplies glucose for rapid absorption, while lemon juice adds vitamin C and makes the drink palatable enough that you will actually finish it, which is the most important factor in any hydration strategy.

Tips

  • Variation. Add a quarter cup of coconut water to boost potassium content, or muddle in a few fresh mint leaves for a cooling effect during hot-weather training.
  • Storage. Make a double batch in a mason jar and keep it in the refrigerator. Shake before pouring, as the honey can settle to the bottom.
  • Substitution. Maple syrup can replace raw honey if preferred. Lime juice works in place of lemon and pairs well with a pinch of ground ginger.
