High-Protein Trail Mix

A mineral-loaded trail mix built around brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, and beef jerky for sustained energy and recovery.

10 min beginner Yields 4 cups Keeps 2-3 weeks in an airtight container at room temperature

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Brazil nuts (whole or halved)
  • 3/4 cup Pumpkin seeds (raw, shelled)
  • 3/4 cup Almonds (raw or dry-roasted)
  • 1/2 cup Dark chocolate (85% cacao or higher, roughly chopped)
  • 3/4 cup Beef jerky (no-sugar-added, cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Sea salt (fine grain)

Steps

  1. If using raw almonds and pumpkin seeds, spread them on a sheet pan and toast in a 325F oven for 8-10 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through, until fragrant and lightly golden. Toasting is optional but deepens flavor and improves crunch. Let cool completely before mixing.

  2. Chop the dark chocolate into rough pieces about the size of a pumpkin seed. Keeping the chocolate pieces small ensures even distribution and prevents one person from grabbing all the chocolate in a single handful.

  3. Cut the beef jerky into bite-sized pieces with kitchen shears. Pieces should be roughly the same size as the nuts so the mix is uniform.

  4. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Sprinkle the sea salt over the top and toss thoroughly with your hands until everything is evenly distributed.

  5. Divide into single-serving portions (about 1/2 cup each) in small bags or jars. This prevents mindless snacking from the full batch and keeps portions consistent.

Why It Works

Each ingredient targets a specific mineral gap common in active men. Brazil nuts deliver selenium โ€” just two nuts provide a full dayโ€™s intake. Pumpkin seeds are one of the highest plant sources of zinc, critical for testosterone production and immune function. Almonds supply magnesium, which supports muscle contraction and sleep quality. The beef jerky adds complete protein and heme iron, while dark chocolate provides antioxidants and additional magnesium.

Tips

  • Portion control. A half-cup serving contains roughly 300 calories and 15 grams of protein. This is a calorie-dense snack by design, so pre-portioning prevents overconsumption.
  • Brazil nut limit. Do not exceed 3-4 brazil nuts per day. Their selenium content is extraordinarily high, and more is not better โ€” excess selenium can cause toxicity over time.
  • Jerky selection. Read labels carefully. Most commercial jerky contains soybean oil, sugar, and artificial preservatives. Look for brands with just beef, salt, and spices, or make your own.
