Chia Seed Energy Gel

A natural endurance gel made from chia seeds, raw honey, lemon, and sea salt. Sustained energy without artificial ingredients.

35 min beginner Yields 1 cup Keeps 5 days refrigerated

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup Water (filtered)
  • 2 tablespoons Raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 1/8 teaspoon Sea salt

Steps

  1. Combine the chia seeds and water in a jar or bowl. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds to prevent the seeds from clumping together at the bottom.
  2. Let the mixture sit for five minutes, then stir again. Repeat one more time. This prevents clumps from forming as the chia seeds begin to absorb water and swell.
  3. After 25 to 30 minutes total, the mixture should have a thick, gel-like consistency. Each chia seed will be surrounded by a translucent coating of absorbed water.
  4. Stir in the raw honey, lemon juice, and sea salt until evenly distributed throughout the gel. The honey should dissolve completely into the wet mixture.
  5. Transfer the gel to small squeeze pouches, reusable silicone bags, or a small jar. Use two to three tablespoons per serving during long workouts or runs, consumed every 30 to 45 minutes.

Why It Works

Chia seeds absorb up to 12 times their weight in water, forming a gel that delivers hydration and energy simultaneously during extended exercise. The combination of soluble fiber from chia and glucose from raw honey provides both immediate and sustained energy without the crash associated with commercial energy gels. Sea salt replaces sodium lost through sweat, maintaining electrolyte balance during endurance activities.

Tips

  • Variation. Blend the finished gel smooth in a blender if you prefer a texture closer to commercial energy gels. Add a splash of coconut water for extra electrolytes.
  • Storage. Store in the refrigerator in a sealed container. The gel thickens over time, so thin it with a small splash of water before use if needed.
  • Substitution. Maple syrup can replace raw honey for a vegan version. For a different flavor, try lime juice and a pinch of ground ginger instead of lemon.
